Dr. Előd Gyenge is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and Theme leader in the Clean Energy Research Centre. Prof. Gyenge’s research is focused on electrocatalysis and electrochemical engineering applied to diverse batteries, fuel cells and electrosynthesis technologies. In the area of hydrogen technologies his research contributions include investigations of the voltage reversal phenomena and carbon corrosion in hydrogen fuel cells, introduction of graphene based microporous layers and development of ultra-low loading Pt catalyst layers for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells and most recently, studies of non-PGM oxygen evolution reaction catalysts and local pH effects in water electrolysis. Prof. Gyenge authored over 100 peer reviewed journal publications and is an inventor/co-inventor of 10 patents, including the patent for CO2 redox flow battery issued in 54 countries. Prof. Gyenge is the recipient of a number of recognitions including Gould Endowment Professor at UBC (2007-2014), Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellow and cross-appointed Professor at Osaka University, Graduate School of Engineering (2016-2019). He is the co-founder of Agora Energy Technologies Ltd., a start-up focused on developing CO2-based power sources.
